Robert Warren Haney Jr., age 71, passed away on Saturday, June 4, 2022. Dr. Haney was born in Cedartown, GA, on September 23, 1950, to Robert Warren Haney Sr. and Jimmie Grimes Haney. His paternal grandparents were Ralph Haney and LaReine Guyor Haney. His maternal grandparents were Paul Grimes Sr. and Cordelia Green Grimes.
Dr. Haney was a 1968 graduate of Cedartown High School and a 1972 graduate of Mercer University. He subsequently earned the master of arts and doctor of philosophy degrees in Spanish from the University of Kentucky. Dr. Haney then devoted his life to higher education, serving in administration at Georgia Southern University, Statesboro, GA, and at Georgia College, Milledgeville, GA. He also loved music and was an accomplished pianist and organist. He was a member of the American Guild of Organists and the Modern Language Association of America.
After retirement Dr. Haney made his home in Savannah, GA, where he was warmly welcomed by the congregation at Skidaway Island United Methodist Church, and he made many friends there. Believing that Christian service expresses love for God, he employed his administrative abilities and his desire to serve people in a number of leadership positions. In addition, he occasionally played the piano or the organ for worship services, choir practices, and other church gatherings.
Dr. Haney is preceded in death by his parents, Robert Warren Haney Sr. and Jimmie Grimes Haney. He is survived by his brother, David Haney of Nashville, TN; by an uncle, Dr. L. August Lovegren of Nolensville, TN; and by cousins Miriam Lovegren Lanier of Beirut, Lebanon, Linda Lovegren Rowland of Nolensville, TN; Michael Griffith of Canton, GA; and Monroe Tuttle of Blairsville, GA.
Visitation for Dr. Haney will be at one o'clock Saturday, June 11, at Gammage Funeral Home. A brief graveside service will follow at Northview Cemetery with Reverend Wayne Benefield officiating. A memorial service will be conducted at Skidaway Island United Methodist Church in Savannah, Georgia on Wednesday, October 12, 2022 at eleven o'clock in the morning; 54 Diamond Causeway, Savannah, GA 31411.
