Mr. Monroe Jackson Smith, age 88, of Cedartown, Georgia passed away on Wednesday, April 15, 2009. He was born on September 16, 1920 in Polk County, the son of Marion Jackson and Sara Elizabeth West Smith.
Mr. Smith was a devoted member, past deacon, and choir director for thirty-five years of East View Baptist Church. He was an Army veteran of World War II serving as a Military Policeman in the European Theater.
Mr. Smith retired from General Motors with thirty-five years of service.
Mr. Smith was a dedicated member of Caledonia Masonic Lodge #121 receipient of Master Mason of the Decade for 1989-1999 and the 2005 Master Mason of the Year. He was also a member of the Cedar Valley Shrine Club, receiving the honored title of Shriner of the Year twice.
He also received the 2008 Exchange Club Book of Golden Deeds.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Jewell Beatrice Powers Smith; son, Larry J. Smith, and his Mother and Father.
Mr. Monroe Smith is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Aaron and Cathy Smith; daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Jim Mullen, Tammy and Timmy Odom; daughter-in-law, Diann Smith all of Cedartown. Grandchildren, Jason Smith of Rome, Scott Smith of Kennesaw, Kristie Mullen Smith, Jeremy Mullen, Madison Odom all of Cedartown; great-grandchildren, Nick Smith, Keely Smith, Logan Smith all of Cedartown, Christopher Smith of Kennesaw; Nieces and nephews, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law also survive.
The funeral service will be conducted on Saturday, April 18, at 2:00 p.m. at East View Baptist Church with Rev. Reginald Campbell officiating. Interment will follow in Northview Cemetery with Military Rites conducted by the Brewster-Cleveland Post #86 Honor Guard and Masonic Rites conducted by Caledonia Lodge 121.
The family will receive friends on Friday, April 17, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Olin L. Gammage and Sons Funeral Home.
