Mrs. Jean K. Moore, age 80, of Cedartown, passed away Saturday, October 3, 2026. She was born July 15, 1946 in Fulton County and was the daughter of Grady and Marie Allen.
Jean retired from the Polk County Health Department as nurse manager with over 30 years of service. Many children received their vaccines from her and she once got to deliver a baby in the back of an ambulance in the parking lot. A 1967 graduate of the Georgia Baptist School of Nursing, she would often affirm her mantra "once a nurse, always a nurse" as she offered friendly advice to those working in doctor offices and hospitals if they did not quite meet her standards.
Whether tennis, bridge, scrabble, or gin, Jean was a fierce competitor. She was on several tennis teams that won numerous championships and her senior USTA 3.5 tennis team represented Georgia in the national sectionals. She loved spending time with her dearest friends, whether playing a game or just laughing and talking.
After retirement, Jean enjoyed traveling with Yancey. Among some of their travels were Hawaii, England, the Panama Canal and Queensferry, Scotland. Their favorite trips were their cruises to Alaska. More recently, she especially loved trips to the casino with her husband where she always tried to beat the house and then made a quick stop to Mercier Orchards for a fried peach pie.
A talented musician, she shared her gift with many- most notably at St. James Episcopal Church, where she was the organist for 40 years.
After a brave battle with cancer over the last four years, many in her family will attest that Jean is simply one of the strongest women they had ever known.
She is preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Janice Brackett.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Yancey Moore; daughters, Amy (Greg) Orebaugh and Meril (Matt) Dailey; brother John (Dondi) Allen; brother in law Jerry (Tish) Moore, and brother in law, Kirk Brackett. She was Nina to her grandchildren Alex (Ashlynn) Orebaugh, Luke Orebaugh, Connor Dailey and her favorite granddaughter, Madeline Dailey. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
The family will receive family and friends on Tuesday, October 6, from 5 pm - 7 pm. Funeral services will be held in the chapel at Gammage Funeral Home Wednesday, October 7 at 10 am with Rev. Britt Madden, Jr. officiating. Interment will be at the Georgia National Cemetery, 1080 Scott Hudgens Drive, Canton, Georgia 30114 at 1 pm.
The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers: Alex Orebaugh, Luke Orebaugh, Connor Dailey, Greg Orebaugh, Matt Dailey and Lance Moore.
The family respectfully requests in lieu of flowers that memorial contributions be made in her honor to the Cancer Navigators of Rome, 3 Central Plaza, Suite 415, Rome, Georgia 30165 or the Polk County Women’s Shelter, PO Box 1647, Cedartown, Georgia 30125.
The family would like to express their gratitude and appreciation to the staff at Heyman Hospice for the excellent and compassionate care given during her illness.
