John Newton Teat's Obituary
Mr. John Newton Teat, age 94, passed away on Wednesday, October 7, 2015 at Cedar Valley Nursing Home in Cedartown, Georgia.
Mr. Teat was born to Oscar and Carrie Mae Burkhalter Teat on December 7, 1920 in Cave Springs, Georgia. Mr. Teat graduated from Cedartown High School in 1937. Then, he went on to serve in the United States Coast Guard during World War II. He received many medals during his service in the military. He was also a 40 year veteran of the National Guard. On May 31st, 1941, while on leave, he married Martha Baker. They were married for 61 years.
Upon returning home, Mr. Teat worked for the Cedartown Standard, Southern Bell, and Georgia Power for 30 years. He retired from Georgia Power in 1983. He also worked for Gammage Funeral Home for a number of years.
Mr. Teat was a longtime member of Kresge Methodist Church. He enjoyed singing in the choir at church. He was also a member of the American Legion Post, Exchange Club, and Senior Singers.
Mr. Teat is survived by his daughters Jane Ellen Teat Osborne (Phil) and Carole Teat Thornton (Bob), three grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and one great, great-grandchild.
Mr. Teat is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Martha Estelle Teat; sister, Mary Sowell; and granddaughter Tonya Keener.
The funeral arrangements for Mr. Teat will be conducted on Saturday, October 10, 2015 at one o'clock in the afternoon in the chapel of the Gammage Funeral Home with Olin L. Gammage, Rev. Billy Vines, and Rev. Allen Carmichael officiating. Music will be provided by Carol Shelton. Interment will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery with full military rites conducted by the Brewster-Cleveland Post #86.
The family of Mr. Teat will receive family and friends on Saturday, October 10, 2015 from eleven o'clock in the morning until the funeral hour at the Gammage Funeral Home.
The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers: Kelly Smith, Shawn Smith, James Wallace, Preston Lockridge, John David (Bubba) Jolly, and Guy Rutland. Honorary Pallbearers are Chris Truett, Jr. and Chris Truett, Sr.,
