Mr. James Alton Honea, age 90, of Lindale, Georgia, passed away on Wednesday, August 21, 2024. He was born on January 15, 1934 in Rome, Georgia, and was the son of the late Horace Greely and Nellie Roper Honea. He graduated from Rome High in 1952, and married his sweetheart, Ruth Evelyn Taylor in 1953. They were married for 53 years, and had 2 children, a daughter Lori and a son, David. James was a devoted husband and father, and always demonstrated kindness and compassion in caring for his children and family. His personality was to make people smile, and was known as a sweet and gentle heart. He was a wonderful Daddy and also best friend to Lori and David.
Before beginning his career, James served in the U.S. Army in Korea as a Sgt. (E-5) with the 7th Infantry Division, 31st Field Artillery. After his tour, he returned home and he and Evelyn moved to Columbus, GA where he worked as Office Manager for Hardaway Construction. In 1963 they moved to Cedartown Ga, to be closer to family. He was Controller at Outside Carpets in Rome, GA for many years, before opening his own payroll and accounting business, Data Processing Service. In 1997, Lori joined him in this business as partners, where they both worked until they retired in 2013. James also opened a parking lot sweeping company where he worked with David for 10 years as well. He enjoyed being with his children, and so provided all of them an opportunity to spend more time together.
Mr. Honea is survived by daughter, Lori Honea Duke (Seth); son, David Michael Honea (Julia); grandchildren, Taylor Rickett (Kelly), Braxton Honea, Brynley Honea, Meghan Hayward (Cody), Marlee Duke, Ramsey Blair, Reagan Blair and Kinsley Oliva; sister-in-law, Ina Taylor; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Honea is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Evelyn Taylor Honea; step-mother, Frances Honea; brothers, Aubrey Honea, Haulman Honea, and Bobby Herschel Honea; and sisters-in-law, Gladys Honea, Clara Honea, Margis Davis and Barbara Taylor; brothers-in-law, Ford Davis, Grady Taylor, and Gerald Taylor.
The funeral service for Mr. Honea will be held on Monday, August 26, 2024 at one o'clock in the afternoon at the First Baptist Church of Cedartown with Rev. Wayne Benefield officiating. Interment will follow in the family lot of the Eastview Cemetery in Rome, Georgia.
The family of Mr. Honea will receive family and friends on Monday, August 26, 2024 from eleven o'clock in the morning until the funeral service hour at the First Baptist Church of Cedartown.
The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers: Kelly Rickett, Cody Hayward, Braxton Honea, Ben Jackson, Ron Duke, Marc Carles and Luis Oliva.
