James Clyde Harrington's Obituary
Mr. James Clyde (Harry) Harrington, age 81, of Charlotte, NC passed away Friday, March 13, 2009.
He was born January 28, 1928, to John William and Cora Watts Harrington on a farm in Clay County, Alabama, near the town of Lineville. He was the youngest of eight children.
Mr. Harrington attended Barfield Elementary and Junior High School (near Lineville) and Lineville High School where he received his high school diploma in 1946.
At an early age he joined the Mt. Olive Baptist Church near his parents' farm. Mr. Harrington served in the U. S. Navy from 1950 to 1954. He attended Jacksonville State University, Jacksonville, Alabama, from 1954 to 1957, earning a Bachelor of Science degree with majors in mathematics and chemistry and a minor in physics.
Mr. Harrington began his Federal Civil Service career in 1958 from which he retired in 1987. During his Civil Service career he worked for the U. S. Air Force at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, NASA at the Johnson Space Center at Houston, Texas and the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, and the U. S. Army at Redstone Arsenal in Alabama, Fort Bliss at El Paso, Texas, and White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico.
He was preceded in death in 2001 by his beloved wife of 39 years, Polly Stitt Harrington.
He is survived by daughter, Susan Harrington Ernest and her husband, Edward Ernest of Charlotte, North Carolina; sister, Mrs. Lois H. Churchwell of Sacramento, CA; grandkittens, Max and Frisco. Several Nieces and Nephews also survive.
Mr. Harrington had an unwavering belief in there being one all-powerful God and life after death. He spent his life reaching for the stars and now has seen the hand of God.
The funeral service for Mr. James Clyde (Harry) Harrington will be conducted on Monday, March 16th , at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of the Olin L. Gammage and Sons Funeral Home with Bob Holcomb officiating. Interment will be beside his wife at Polk Memory Gardens in Cedartown, Georgia.
The family will receive friends at Gammage Funeral Home on Monday, from 1:00 p.m. until the funeral hour.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Lung Association, 2452 Spring Rd., Smyrna, GA 30080.
