Obituary

The American flag at the home of Mr. Harwell G. Minshew was lowered to half mast on April 9, 2010 where he passed away quietly after an extended illness. He was born July 19, 1924 in Cherokee County, Alabama, to Thomas and Irene Sutherlin Minshew (both deceased). Besides his parents, Mr. Minshew is preceded in death by siblings, Inez Reeves, Tressie Lumsden, Emma Grace Simmons, Ruenette McDaniel, Jo Morris, Clayton Minshew, Otis Minshew, Norman Minshew; and his beloved grandson, Taylor O'Brien Pratt.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church and a veteran of WWII. He was a mason at Caledonia Lodge #121 and in his younger years he was active in many local civic organizations.

Mr. Harwell G. Minshew is survived by his wife of sixty three years, Elizabeth Watts Minshew, who was at his bedside when his last breath was taken and he entered into his heavenly home. He is also survived by his daughters Judy Minshew Doss of Jackson, Mississippi and Jane Minshew Pratt (John) of Acworth, Georgia; three granddaughters, Jamie Doss McDonnell of Memphis, TN, Lyn Doss Day of Hazlehurst, MS, and Jenni Pratt Johnson of Roswell, GA; and five great grandchildren, Chloe, Andrew,& Brian McDonnell and Adam & Lee Day.

The funeral for Mr. Minshew will be conducted on Monday, April 12th at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of the Olin L. Gammage & Sons Funeral Home with Rev. Wayne Benefield officiating. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery with Dr. David Taylor officiating.

Pallbearers are Thomas Ingram, Bob Worthington, Larry Reynolds, Wayne Reeves, James Garner, and Scott Tillery. Honorary pallbearers are Lewis Minshew, Sonny Waddell, Buddy Green, Bud Lott, Charles Trippe, and Bill Ingram.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, April 11th from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Olin L. Gammage and Sons Funeral Home.
The family requests that flowers be omitted; however, contributions may be made to The Cedartown First Baptist Church Memorial Fund.

The Olin L. Gammage and Sons Funeral Home is handling the arrangements for Mr. Harwell G. Minshew.
