Mrs. Dorothy Josephine Barry Mahmarian, age 93 of Rome, passed away on Tuesday, March 25, 2014. She was born on January 18, 1921 in Union City, New Jersey. She was the daughter of the late Joseph Oscar Barry and Dorothy Johanna Spiegel Barry.
Mrs. Mahmarian was an only child. Growing up Mrs. Mahmarian had many fond memories with her family; most of all she, loved traveling to Tennessee by train to share wonderful times with her parents, grandparents, uncles and aunts and many first cousins. She attended elementary school through high school in Union City, NJ. Then she continued on to business school in New York City and finished the two year course in one year! During school she was involved in many organizations and clubs. The Charter Member of Trinity Assembly #30 for girls. She was also a member of the New York Chapter of American Institute of Banking and the women's chairman representing the National Bank of New York City from 1949-1950.
In 1950, Dorothy and John were married. Mrs. Dorothy went to work for the Lawyer's Cooperation Publishing Company in NYC, then moved on to work at Life Extension Industries in NYC in the office of the Directors' of Medicine. Next she worked with Chase National Bank. She loved her experiences there working in a top-level administration from 1939-1952, she then left Chase to be a stay at home mom to raise their children- twins, Janet and John. She stated that these were the best days of her life! She went back to college in 1972 at Farleigh Dickinson University with a BA degree and graduated with Magma Cum Laude. Then she worked from 1972-1983 at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in NYC on 168 th street in administration with Dr. Milton Porter and later for vice president Dr. John L. Roglieri. In 1984 Dorothy and John moved to Villa Rica, Georgia where she volunteered for over 20 years at Tanner Medical Center in Carrollton, Georgia.
Mrs. Mahmarian is survived by her loving husband, John Mahmarian; daughter, Janet M. Sloan; son and daughter-in-law, John Joseph Mahmarian and Angela C. Mahmarian and grandchildren, Jessica Sloan Lemming and husband Joshua and Brittany Sloan.
The funeral arrangements for Mrs. Mahmarian will be conducted on Friday, March 28, 2014 at eleven o'clock in the morning at the Turning Point Church in Cedartown with Dr. Kenneth McClary officiating.
The family of Mrs. Mahmarian will receive family and friends on Thursday, March 27, 2014 from seven o'clock in the evening until nine o'clock in the evening at the Gammage Funeral Home. Also, the body will lie in state one hour before the funeral hour at the church on Friday, March 28, 2014.
