Dixie Smith Lewis' Obituary
Mrs. Dixie Smith Lewis, age 83, of Cedartown passed away on Sunday, October 24, 2010. She was born on January 7, 1927 in Cherokee County, Alabama to the late Boyd Smith and Bessie Ferguson Smith.
Mrs. Lewis is also preceded in death by her husband, Herbert "Shorty" Lewis, Sr.; sisters, Edna Waters, Betty Faye Mitchell; brothers, Buddy Smith, and Charles "Preacher" Smith.
In 1945 Dixie and her late husband, Shorty, began supplying fresh produce to schools, grocery stores, restaurants in the northwest Georgia area. They operated a very successful business that enabled the Lewis' to meet the needs of raising their seven children. Upon Shorty's passing in 1993, Dixie knew that it would be a difficult task to continue running the business, but with the help of her sons, she showed resilience and determination, took charge and became the "in charge" mom. She continued the daily duties of taking and sorting orders and keeping the company's records. Days prior to her death, with her pride for the company, Dixie was handling bookkeeping duties. To keep the loving memory of Dixie and Shorty Lewis in their hearts the children will keep Lewis Produce in business providing fresh produce to their faithful customers.
She is survived by her daughters, Patricia Pruitt of Cedartown, Kathy McPherson of Bremen, Carol Kelley of Cedartown; sons, Herbert Lewis, Jr. of Gaylesville, AL, Clyde Lewis of Cedartown, Terry Lewis of Cedartown, and Ricky Ray Lewis of Cedartown. Twenty-one grandchildren and thirty-seven great and great-great grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service for Mrs. Dixie Lewis will be conducted on Tuesday, October 26th, at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel of the Olin L. Gammage & Sons Funeral Home with Rev. Anthony Trawick and Dr. Charles Garner officiating. Interment will follow in Polk Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends on Monday, October 25th, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Olin L. Gammage & Sons Funeral Home.
Pallbearers are Scott Maddox, Ron Pruitt, Brad Lewis, Jeremy Holland, Danny Rittenhouse, and Shane Fincher.
The Olin L. Gammage & Sons Funeral Home is handling the arrangements for Mrs. Dixie Smith Lewis.
