Mr. Dewey Bert Wood, Jr. age 66, of Cedartown passed away on Saturday, August 18, 2007. He was born August 11, 1941 in Polk County the son of the late Dewey Bert Wood, Sr. and Carro Johnson Wood Smith.
He was presently serving as a Cedartown City Commissioner. He had been appointed Chairman of the Commission seven of the twenty-two years that he served his community in this capacity. He was recently elected First Vice-President of the lst District Georgia Municipal Association.
He was instrumental in the development and construction of the Northwest Recreational Park, and was honored when the park was recently renamed Bert Wood Youth and Athletic Complex. He was a former recreational director for the City of Cedartown. He coached youth football, basketball and baseball for thirty years, served several terms as President of Cedartown Little League, and was co-founder and past president of Cedartown Bulldog Club.
He also served on the Board of Directors of the Cedartown Boys and Girls Club.
He was a member of Sara Hightower Tri-County Library Board, two years serving as President.
He attended The First Baptist of Cedartown where he was on the Welcoming Committee and a member of The L. D. Wheeler Sunday School Class.
Mr. Wood was a 1960 graduate of Cedartown High School and a retiree of the United States Postal Service.
A member of Cedar Valley Shrine Club and Caledonia Lodge #121 where he served as Worshipful Master for two years.
Mr. Wood is preceded in death by his parents, grandchild, Brandy Hatch, and stepson, Jeff Liley.
Mr. Dewey Bert Wood, Jr. is survived by wife, Ann Pascoe Wood; son, Skipper Wood; daughter, Lisa Allen; daughter and son-in-law, Gina and Hollis Jackson. Seven grandchildren and one great grandchild also survive.
The family will receive friends on Monday, August 20, from 6:00 until 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
The funeral service for Mr. Dewey Bert Wood, Jr. will be conducted on Tuesday, August 21, at 5:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Cedartown with Dr. David Taylor, Rev. Wayne Benefield, and his grandson, Will Allen officiating. The interment service will follow at Northview Cemetery
with Masonic rites being conducted by Caledonia Masonic Lodge #121.
Pallbearers are Phillip Gammage, Raymond Kuglar, Grandsons, Matt Wood, Derrick Hatch, William Bert Allen; son-in-law, Hollis Jackson.
Honorary pallbearers are members of the Caledonia Lodge #121, Cedartown City Commissioners, Members of the L. D. Wheeler Sunday School Class, and City of Cedartown Employees.
