Mr. Dennis Michael McAvoy, age 72, of Cedartown, passed away on Monday, November 14, 2011. He was born on February 24, 1939 in Ottawa, Canada. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John and Verna Moncrief McAvoy.
Mr. McAvoy was a veteran of the United States Navy. Mr. McAvoy was retired from Murata, in Rockmart and Raytheon Aerospace.
Mr. McAvoy is survived by his wife, Mrs. Sylvia Anne Landers McAvoy; sons and daughter-in-laws, Dennis Michael II and Renee and Robert Langley and Sandy; daughter and son-in-law, Lawana Gurley and Lee; sister, Maryann Bagwell; seven grandchildren, Robin Benefield and husband Jeffery, Erin Gurley, Tabitha McAvoy, Breana Gurley, Angel Langley, Kailey Burr and Cacey Dalton; two great-grandchildren, Robert Benefield and James Benefield and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. McAvoy is preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Richard McAvoy, Robert McAvoy and Edgar McAvoy.
The funeral service for Mr. McAvoy will be conducted on Sunday, November 20, 2011 at four o'clock in the afternoon in the chapel of the Gammage Funeral Home with Rev. Patrick Latham officiating.
Interment will be in the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia, on Monday, November 21, 2011 at two o'clock in the afternoon with full military honors.
The family of Mr. McAvoy will receive family and friends on Saturday, November 19, 2011 from six o'clock in the evening until nine o'clock in the evening at the Gammage Funeral Home.
Flowers are being accepted; however, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society, 200 W. Emery Street, Suite 3, Dalton, GA 30720.
The following gentlemen have been asked to serve as pallbearers; Jimmy Landers, Charles Wills, Clyde Benefield, Bryan Bentley, Rick Ramey, Tony Chafin and Ricky Zoller.
